Behavioural variation in natural populations. VII. Maternal body temperature does not affect juvenile thermoregulation in a garter snake

چکیده
This study was aimed to determine whether thermoregulation by juvenile garter snakes is affected by developmental temperature imposed by their mothers during pregnancy. Maternal temperature treatments were created by maintaining six groups of females at six different constant temperatures (2632°C) during pregnancy. A seventh group of females was allowed to thermoregulate during pregnancy. The body temperatures of juveniles (N=324) on thermal gradients were monitored in the morning and afternoon for 5 consecutive days, beginning 5 days after birth. The body temperatures of juveniles were consistent, apparently heritable and remarkably stereotyped. Juvenile body temperature was virtually unaffected by maternal temperature treatment

Daily Variation in the Body Temperatures of Free-Ranging Garter Snakes
This study describes how the body temperatures (Th) of individual garter snakes varied on a daily basis under field conditions. Temperature-sensitive radio transmitters were surgically implanted into 10 Thamnophis elegans vagrans in eastern Wash? ington. The snakes were released and monitored at 15-min intervals for periods of up to several days from June 1979 to May 1980. Operative environment...
متن کاملGenetic architecture of a feeding adaptation: garter snake (Thamnophis) resistance to tetrodotoxin bearing prey.
Detailing the genetic basis of adaptive variation in natural populations is a first step towards understanding the process of adaptive evolution, yet few ecologically relevant traits have been characterized at the genetic level in wild populations. Traits that mediate coevolutionary interactions between species are ideal for studying adaptation because of the intensity of selection and the well...
متن کاملPolymorphic Clay Models of Thamnophis Sirtalis Suggest Patterns of Avian Predation
Models of snakes varying in color pattern have been used to test hypotheses about predation and mimicry. In the present study, clay models of the common garter snake were used to test for a difference in attack frequency between adult and juvenile striped and melanistic garter snakes; such difference may indicate a difference in cryptic coloration between the two morphs. The research was perfor...
متن کاملFamily, sex and testosterone effects on garter snake behaviour
To better understand how genes and hormones interact to affect behaviour in nature, I used a factorial design to test for effects of family membership, sex and testosterone level on activity and defensive behaviour of the common garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis. Behaviours (latency to move, defensive strikes, response distance) were scored prior to hormone manipulation (when snakes were 39 day...
متن کاملEvidence for Selection on Thermoregulation: Effects of Temperature on Embryo Mortality in the Garter Snake Thamnophis elegans
Despite widespread belief that selection molds thermoregulatory behaviors, direct evidence for fitness effects is extremely rare. We studied the effect of developmental temperature on embryo mortality in a viviparous snake. Seventy-four female Thamnophis elegans were maintained at one of nine constant temperatures during pregnancy (21–33 C). The duration of pregnancy was recorded for each femal...
